Directions & Dosage- Pool Filter Sand

No 20 Silica Sand is a staple in the pool industry as its the backbone of most sand filters. Though glass media can offer several benefits, silica sand is still a perfectly good choice in many cases. Typically, pea gravel is used to layer over the laterals and prevent chanelling, then the sand bed is put over top. Make sure to consult the weight recommendations for your specific filter.

How often to change sand in a swimming pool filter

We recommend changing out the sand in your filter once every 5 years, but sand filters can go as long as 10 or 15 years without being changed. It ultimately comes down to how abrasive the sand still is. In short, new sand is more abrasive and excels at filtering out particles, while old sand will struggle to filter out particles, and become clogged quickly. If you find yourself needing to backwash everyday due to the pressure quickly rising, or can't seem to clear up your pool despite perfect chemistry, it may be time for a sand change.

What type of sand is used in pool filters?

Pool filter sand is No #20 Silica Sand, each grain ranging from .45 to .55 mm in size.
